Volunteer: Docents

April through October on the 2nd and 4th Sunday, with flexible scheduling

Docents serve as a knowledgeable and engaging representative of the Darius Heald Home and Zumwalt’s Fort, responsible for interpreting the historical significance of both sites for visitors of all ages. This position requires the ability to accurately recite historical facts and narratives either from memory or from prepared scripts and storyboards, as well as to convey this information in an engaging, storytelling manner that brings the past to life. Docent responsibilities include basic set up and clean up, greeting visitors, collecting admission fees, and providing guided tours. 

Flexible scheduling means you can sign up to volunteer on tour dates that are convenient for you.

DOCENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assists with opening/closing house and fort for tours and special events 

• Greet visitors; provide tickets to guests 

• Collect admission fees, balance cash at the end of the day 

• Provide guided tour of Heald Home and/or Fort to guests 

• Promote safety of visitors; assure safe keeping of contents 

• Provides excellent customer service and ensures a positive, educational visitor experience. 


REQUIREMENTS:

Volunteers must be 18 or older and able to pass a background check.Have reliable transportation to and from sites.Ability to respond to scheduling through email.

Visitors will explore the sites alongside knowledgeable docents, learn about pioneer life on the Missouri frontier, and enjoy hands-on demonstrations and activities that bring the 1800's to life. Heald Home and Zumwalt's Fort Tours provide a meaningful glimpse into the past and a chance to connect with the past.
